Club Path Explained
Club path is the horizontal direction the clubhead is travelling at impact, relative to the target line, measured in degrees. It's one half of the pair that explains every curved golf shot ever hit — the other half is face angle. If the face is the steering wheel for where the ball starts, path is the engine of how it curves.

What the numbers mean
For a right-handed golfer:
- Positive path (in-to-out): the club is travelling out to the right of the target line at impact — the draw-friendly delivery.
- Negative path (out-to-in): the club is cutting across to the left — the fade-friendly delivery (and the classic "over the top" pattern when it's large).
- Zero: travelling straight down the line at impact.
(For left-handers, mirror everything — the physics doesn't care which side you stand on.)
The ball curves away from the path whenever the face doesn't match it: a face open to the path spins the ball toward the fade side, closed spins it toward the draw side. The gap between them — face-to-path — is what actually bends the ball; see spin axis.
What's a "good" club path?
Within about ±3° of neutral is a healthy, playable window; tour deliveries commonly live between 0° and +4°. But the honest answer is that path has no single ideal — it has a purpose: a repeatable path that matches your face is a shot shape you can aim. A 2° out-to-in path with a slightly open-to-target, closed-to-path face is a tour-quality fade pattern, not a fault. Path only becomes a problem when it forces a face fight — when squaring the face to that path requires timing you don't have under pressure.
What actually sets your path
Path faults are rarely made at impact — they're made earlier:
- Alignment. Shoulders open at address pre-set an out-to-in path; closed pre-sets in-to-out. Many chronic "path faults" are the body faithfully returning the club along the line the setup demanded. Check aim before touching the swing.
- Sequence. A downswing that starts with the upper body throws the club outward — the over-the-top, out-to-in classic. Lower-body-first transitions shallow the path.
- Ball position. Further back in the stance = the club is caught earlier in its arc = more in-to-out delivered. Forward = more out-to-in. Drift here mimics a swing change.
- Attack angle geometry. Hitting down presents the path more out; hitting up presents it more in — same swing, different delivered path. This is why your driver path (up-strike) reads more in-to-out than your wedge path (down-strike).
How to change it
Path responds fast to exaggeration. To move in-to-out: feel the club exiting toward right field (right-hander), with a headcover just outside the ball as a gate. To move out-to-in: the opposite exit feel. Confirm alignment first, change one variable, then re-measure — path is one of the quickest numbers to shift within a single session, which also means it drifts back just as fast without a checkpoint.
Reading path in your data
Read the average WITH face-to-path, and the spread on its own. A steady path with a scattered face = release timing. Both scattered = sequencing further back in the chain. And a path that's fine on the range but collapses out-to-in on the course is usually tempo under pressure, not technique.
Frequently asked questions
Is an in-to-out path better than out-to-in?
Neither is "better" — a small, repeatable path either way with a matched face is a stock shape. In-to-out is required for a push-draw; out-to-in for a pull-fade. What's costly is a big path with a face that can't keep up.
What club path causes a slice?
The slice curve comes from the face being open to the path — but big slices usually pair an out-to-in path with that open face, which is why slicers' balls start left-ish and bend hard right (right-hander). Fixing only the path without the face swaps a slice for a push.
Why is my driver path more in-to-out than my irons?
Geometry, not inconsistency. Hitting up on the teed driver presents the path more from the inside; hitting down with irons presents it more out. A couple of degrees of difference between them is normal and expected.
How do I make my path more in-to-out?
Check shoulder alignment, move the ball slightly back to test the effect, and train the exit: swings that finish with the club travelling toward the far-side field, with a gate drill for honesty. Exaggerate in practice — the real swing keeps a fraction of the feel.
