Garmin Approach R10 & R50
The Approach R10 made launch data cheap: a pocket radar on a tripod that reports ball, club and modelled flight through the Garmin Golf app. The R50 is a different animal — a three-camera photometric unit with a 10-inch touchscreen that measures spin with any ball and reads club delivery from a sticker on the face. Both export a clean CSV from the Garmin Golf app, and ShotIQ reads the R10's own 'Spin Rate Type' column to know when a spin number was measured and when it was estimated.

Which numbers are measured — and which are computed
Every launch monitor computes some of what it shows. A carry distance is a trajectory model run on measured launch numbers; a smash factor is one measurement divided by another. Knowing which is which tells you how much to trust a change — and it is what ShotIQ's import gateway uses to decide which analyses to switch on for your sessions.

Spin, balls and stickers
Spin: R10: total spin is measured outdoors; indoors it is estimated unless you hit Titleist Pro V1 / Pro V1x RCT balls (radar-reflective marker inside), which Garmin says lifts indoor spin capture above 99%. Spin axis is always calculated on the R10. R50: spin and axis measured by camera with any ball, indoors or out.
Club data: R10 club numbers come from radar and are the loosest part of its data — good enough to see a repeating pattern across a session, not to trust one swing. R50 club data is optical (sticker on the face) and reliable enough for face-to-path work. ShotIQ weights the ball data first on R10 sessions and lets Impact Lab open fully on R50 sessions.
Subscription: Core data is free in the Garmin Golf app. Home Tee Hero simulator courses need a Garmin Golf membership ($9.99/mo or $99.99/yr). Third-party sims (E6 Connect, GSPro, Awesome Golf, Creative Golf) connect directly.
Space and setup
- R10: on the ground 6–8 ft behind the tee, red alignment line on ball and target; tee at least 8 ft from the net; a 2 × 2 ft hitting area starting 6 ft from the unit.
- R50: roughly 1–2 ft in front of and to the side of the ball, so it needs less room behind you; keep about 8 ft of flight to the net or screen.
- Update R10 firmware to 4.50 or later — 4.40 shipped a data-reporting bug.
How accurate is it?
R10 ball speed, launch and carry are solid for the price; spin (indoors without RCT) and club delivery are estimates that widen shot to shot. Reviewers commonly quote roughly 90% agreement with reference units outdoors and less indoors. The R50's camera measurements close most of that gap. ShotIQ's import gateway sanity-checks R10 rows (a 1.62 smash factor, a spin number tagged 'estimated') instead of trusting them blindly.
How to get your data into ShotIQ
Garmin Golf app (iOS / Android)
- Open the Garmin Golf app → Practice (Driving Range) → the session.
- Tap the share / ⋮ menu on the session and choose Export → CSV (or share to Files).
- The file is named DrivingRange-YYYY-MM-DD.csv and includes Club Speed, Attack Angle, Club Path, Club Face, Face to Path, Ball Speed, Smash, Launch, Backspin, Sidespin, Spin Rate, Spin Rate Type, Spin Axis, Apex, Carry, Deviation, Total and the air-density conditions.
- Upload it to ShotIQ → Know Your Game → Add a session. R10 files carry a units row (mph / deg / m or yds) that ShotIQ reads, so metric exports convert correctly.
Format: CSV, one row per shot, units row under the header — R10 exports in your app units (metres or yards); R50 exports the same layout with a Brand/Model column.

Tips
- Hit RCT balls indoors on the R10 — it is the single biggest accuracy upgrade the unit has.
- Keep the R10 in yards or metres consistently; ShotIQ converts, but mixed units across sessions make your own eyes lie.
- Ten shots per club per session is where the R10's club-delivery averages start to mean something.
Frequently asked questions
Does ShotIQ work with the Garmin Approach R10?
Yes — export the practice session as CSV from the Garmin Golf app (DrivingRange-YYYY-MM-DD.csv) or screenshot it. ShotIQ has a dedicated Garmin parser that reads the units row and the Spin Rate Type column.
And the R50?
Yes, same export from the Garmin Golf app. Because the R50 measures spin, spin axis and clubface optically, Impact Lab and the face-to-path coaching open fully on R50 sessions.
How accurate is the R10?
Good on ball speed, launch and carry; looser on spin indoors and on club path/face, which are radar-derived. Read R10 club numbers as session patterns — ShotIQ does exactly that and flags suspect rows.
Does the R10 measure club face angle?
Garmin publishes club face, path and face-to-path for the R10, derived from radar. They are useful as averages over a session; the R50 measures the same numbers optically and per shot.
Do I need RCT balls?
Only for measured spin indoors on the R10. Outdoors the R10 measures spin from the flight; the R50 measures it with any ball anywhere.
Do I need a Garmin subscription for my data?
No. Practice data and CSV export are free. The membership is for Home Tee Hero simulator courses.
The app says my spin is estimated — does ShotIQ know?
Yes. The R10 CSV includes a Spin Rate Type column; ShotIQ reads it and flags each estimated spin value in the My Sessions shot table (hover or tap the spin cell). Your session summary also counts measured vs estimated spin.
How much space does the R10 need?
6–8 ft behind the ball, at least 8 ft from the ball to the net, and ceiling room for a full swing. Garmin's manual specifies a 2 × 2 ft hitting area.
