Club Head Speed Explained
Club head speed is how fast the head of the club is travelling at the moment it meets the ball, measured in miles per hour. It sets the ceiling on how far you can possibly hit the ball — but it's only potential. Whether that potential becomes distance depends on the quality of the collision, which is why club speed is best read alongside ball speed and smash factor.

What is club head speed?
Launch monitors measure (or, for camera-based units, calculate) the speed of the club head just before impact. It is not the same as how hard you swing — it's how fast the sequence of your body delivers the club. Two golfers with identical effort can be 15 mph apart purely on sequencing.

Speed also steps down predictably through the bag — a typical gap is 4–6 mph between adjacent clubs, ending with wedges swung at roughly 60–70% of driver speed. A tour-level 7-iron is swung around 90 mph.
Why club speed matters
Distance is speed multiplied by efficiency. Every additional mile per hour of club speed is worth roughly 1.5 mph of ball speed at a constant smash factor — about 3 yards of carry with the driver. That compounds: 5 mph of club speed is a legitimate 15-yard gain, which changes the club you hit into most greens.
But the order of operations matters. Speed multiplies your efficiency — so a golfer leaking speed at impact (smash factor well below their club's ceiling) gains more from fixing strike than from swinging harder, and gains the most from doing both.
Where speed actually comes from
The body produces speed in a sequence — pressure shifts to the lead side, then hips, chest, arms, and finally the club accelerate in order, each segment passing speed to the next. When the order breaks (arms starting the downswing first), speed is spent before the ball and the club path usually suffers with it.
Practical levers, in the order most amateurs should pull them:
- Sequence before effort. Swinging at 80% effort with the lower body leading is routinely faster than 100% effort arms-first. If your best drives come from your smoothest swings, this is why.
- Use the ground. Pushing off the lead leg through impact adds speed and stabilizes your low point at the same time.
- Train speed deliberately. Overspeed work (light sticks, maximum-intent swings) reliably adds several mph over weeks — do it fresh, not at the end of a range session.
- Mind the fatigue signal. If your club speed decays noticeably late in sessions, that's conditioning and sequencing under fatigue, and it will show up late in rounds too.
Reading club speed in your data
Club speed should be boring: steady within a session, stepping down evenly through the bag. Two patterns worth acting on:
- Speed below your build and athleticism with a normal strike → sequencing, not strength.
- Speed fine, distance short → the leak is at impact. Check smash factor and attack angle before booking a speed program.

What's a good club head speed for an average golfer?
The average male amateur swings the driver around 93 mph; anything over 100 mph is genuinely quick for a recreational player. More useful than the comparison: whether your ball speed is close to 1.48× your number. If it is, you're getting everything out of the speed you have.
How much distance does 5 mph of club speed add?
At a constant smash factor, roughly 15 yards of driver carry. If your smash factor is currently low, fixing strike first makes every future mph worth more.
Can I gain club head speed without changing my swing?
Usually, yes — most amateurs gain a few mph immediately by improving sequence (lower body starts the downswing) and swinging at a controlled 80–90% effort where the strike stays centered. Dedicated overspeed training adds more on top.
Does grip pressure affect club speed?
Yes — squeezing hard slows the club. Tension in the hands and forearms restricts the natural release of speed at the bottom of the swing. A grip pressure around 4/10 keeps the speed you generate.
