In plain English

Tempo is the RATIO of your backswing time to downswing time — good swings across all skill levels cluster near 3:1. It's not about swinging slow; it's about swinging in order.

Going deeper

When tempo breaks, everything measured at impact scatters at once: face, path, low point. If your data is tight early in sessions and wild late, that's tempo/fatigue, not technique.

The advanced view

Tempo is the pressure-proof wrapper around your mechanics: under stress, fast-twitch transition shortens the 3:1 ratio and the face never squares. Training WITH a tempo count builds a swing that survives the first tee.

Why it matters for scoring

The cheapest dispersion-tightener in golf — no positions required.

How it shows up in your ball flight

Rushed tempo: everything your worst miss already does, but bigger. Smooth tempo: your existing swing, repeated.

How it shows up in launch monitor data

Dispersion and carry variance that grow within a session; two-way misses that appear only on course.

Typical values: ~3:1 backswing-to-downswing time.

Symptoms

Common causes

How to improve it

  1. Count 1-2-3 back, 1 down — every practice ball
  2. Build a same-length pre-shot routine and never skip it
  3. When it goes wrong on course, swing at 80% until the ratio returns
Common misconception. "Slow backswing = good tempo." Tempo is a ratio — a slow backswing with a violent transition is WORSE than brisk-and-matched.
