Lag & Transition
The moment the swing changes direction — where speed is stored or spent.
In plain English
Transition is the split second between backswing and downswing. Start it smoothly with the lower body and the club 'lags' behind, storing speed for impact. Rush it with the hands and the speed is spent before the ball.
Going deeper
Lag isn't a position to hold — it's a RESULT of good sequencing plus soft wrists. Casting (throwing the angle away early) costs speed and moves the low point back.
The advanced view
The transition move sets shaft pitch (plane), path window, and speed budget in one motion. Prioritize a lower-body-first transition at 80% effort over any downswing 'position' — the positions follow the order.
Why it matters for scoring
Speed you don't have to swing harder for, and the origin of most over-the-top patterns.
How it shows up in your ball flight
Cast/early transition: weak fades, high floaty irons, scooped wedges. Smooth transition: compression and effortless-looking speed.
How it shows up in launch monitor data
Smash factor below the club's ceiling with normal strike location, plus club speed low for your effort level.
Typical values: irons ~1.33–1.40, driver ~1.44–1.50.
Symptoms
- Feels hard but flies short
- Best swings happen at 70% effort
- Divots behind the ball at full speed
Common causes
- Swinging at 100% (sequence collapses)
- Grip pressure spike at the top
- Starting down with the shoulders
How to improve it
- Pump drills: slow transition rehearsals, then hit at 80%
- Count '1-2' to the top, 'three' through the ball
- Feel the lead hip clear BEFORE the arms fall
