The reason is simple. Ask a 12-handicap how far they hit their 56° and you'll get one number — "about 90." But "about 90" is useless on a course, because you're almost never at 90. You're at 78, or 104, or 66. And the golfer with one number per wedge has exactly one answer for all of those: swing harder or softer and hope.

The fix is a system the best players have used for decades, and it's the idea behind ShotIQ's Wedge Matrix: you don't own four wedges. You own twelve shots.

The core idea: four wedges × three swings = twelve known numbers

Take your four scoring clubs — say a pitching wedge, a 52°, a 56° and a 60°. Now hit each of them with three repeatable swing lengths: a 50% (hip-to-hip), a 75% (three-quarter, shoulder-high), and a 100% (full). That's a 4×3 grid — a matrix — of twelve carry numbers.

The magic isn't the full swings you already sort of know. It's the partials. A dialed 75% and 50% with each wedge fills in the gaps between your full-swing carries, until you have a stock, repeatable shot to almost every yardage inside 120 — no guessing, no muscling, no deceleration.

The trap this replaces is the one every weekend golfer knows: standing over a 78-yard shot with a full-swing 90-yard wedge, trying to "take a little off." That soft, decelerating half-swing is where fat, thin and short shots live. A 75% swing you've measured is a different animal — it's a full, committed motion to a known number.

Meet the golfer: a 12-handicap with four wedges and no plan

Let's make this concrete with a real example — the kind ShotIQ builds from a golfer's own launch monitor data. Call him Alex: a 12-handicap who plays twice a week, owns a launch monitor, and like most amateurs has never actually measured his wedges.

Alex sets up on the range with his four wedges and hits seven balls with each, at each swing length. Twenty-one balls per wedge, eighty-four shots total, about 25 minutes. Here's the matrix ShotIQ built from his data:

What the matrix reveals: coverage, and one glaring hole

First, the coverage. Line up all twelve carries from longest to shortest and you get a ladder:

Look how tight most of that is. From 90 yards down, Alex now has a stock, full-commitment shot every 4–8 yards. Standing at 68? That's a 75% 56° — not a nervous half-wedge, a real swing to a real number. Standing at 82? A 75% 52°. He's no longer inventing shots on the course; he's selecting them.

Second — and this is where it gets valuable — the hole. Look at the top of the ladder:

118 (PW full) → 104 (GW full)

That's a 14-yard gap with nothing in between. His PW 75% carries 98, which sits below the gap. So when Alex has a shot of 110 yards — a common approach distance — he has no stock swing for it. His only options are a soft, decelerating PW (which he'll leak short) or a jumpy, over-swung GW (which flies long and spins down). This is exactly the distance he'd been mysteriously making bogeys from, and he never knew why. The number was invisible until the matrix drew it.

The fix, in the golfer's own words

Once you can see the gap, the fix is obvious and cheap. Alex has two honest options:

  1. Dial a fourth swing length. An 85% PW — a touch more than three-quarter — carries about 110. He hits fifteen of them over two range sessions until it's a stock shot. The hole is closed, no new equipment.
  2. Re-examine the loft. If that gap showed up between clubs he could adjust (say his GW was a 50° and there was room to bend it, or add a 48°), a small loft change would fill it. But loft changes are for when a swing can't — and here a swing can.

This is the honest version of a wedge fitting: you don't need a new wedge to "cover 110." You need to know that 110 was uncovered, and then either dial a swing or adjust a loft. The Wedge Matrix is what makes the invisible visible.

Building your own — the 25-minute version

  1. Pick your swing references. 50% = hands to hip height on the backswing. 75% = hands to shoulder height. 100% = your normal full wedge swing. The key is that the tempo stays the same — you change the length of the backswing, not the effort. Same rhythm, shorter or longer swing.
  2. Hit 5–7 balls per cell. More is better; five is the floor for a number you can trust. Watch the ball land — carry is what you're mapping, not total roll-out.

Do I need a launch monitor to build one?
