Gear can't fix a flaw — but wrong gear can invent one.

In plain English

Clubs matched to your speed and delivery make your existing swing easier; mismatched ones make you compensate. Neither replaces impact skills.

Going deeper

Data-first fitting: your spin, launch and dispersion per club show whether hardware is costing you. Ballooning driver at moderate spin loft? Maybe shaft/loft. Ballooning WITH scoopy delivery? That's you, not the club.

The advanced view

Fitting optimizes around your DELIVERY — so fit after stabilizing strike and attack, not before. Gapping is the exception: a bag with a 51-yard hole (see My Bag) is an equipment problem no swing fixes.

Why it matters for scoring

Because the 'new driver or lessons' question has a data answer.

How it shows up in your ball flight

Wrong gear fingerprints: right-flight-wrong-distance, or dispersion that tightens dramatically with one specific club.

How it shows up in launch monitor data

Per-club outliers in My Bag: one club whose smash/dispersion breaks the bag's pattern, or gap analysis showing coverage holes.

Symptoms

Common causes

How to improve it

  1. Audit gaps in My Bag before buying anything
  2. Fix strike location first — fitting results built on off-center hits fit the WRONG swing
  3. Fit the wedge gaps and driver loft first; they pay fastest
Common misconception. "More expensive shafts = more distance." Distance comes from speed × strike × attack. A fitting optimizes; it doesn't donate.
