Strike Location & Gear Effect
WHERE on the face you hit it — the hidden hand behind weird curves.
In plain English
Hitting the center of the face transfers the most speed. Miss toward heel or toe and the ball loses speed AND picks up curve you didn't swing for.
Going deeper
Gear effect: on off-center hits the face twists, 'gearing' the ball the other way — toe strikes add draw-spin, heel strikes add fade-spin (strongest with driver). A curve your face/path numbers can't explain is usually strike.
The advanced view
Strike location moves smash, spin AND axis at once: a driver toe strike can turn a 2° open-face fade delivery into a hook that confuses every impact number. Before rebuilding a swing over weird data, spray the face and LOOK.
Why it matters for scoring
It's the explanation of last resort for data that doesn't add up — and the first thing to check before blaming your swing.
How it shows up in your ball flight
Toe: draw/hook bias with distance loss. Heel: fade/slice bias, sometimes hosel-adjacent terror. Low face: low spinny nothing. High face: high launch, low spin (driver's friend, iron's thief).
How it shows up in launch monitor data
Smash factor swings shot-to-shot while your face/path stay steady; spin axis disagreeing with face-to-path is the classic gear-effect fingerprint.
Typical values: smash within 0.05 of your club's ceiling on good strikes.
Symptoms
- Same swing, different curve
- Smash bouncing between 1.30 and 1.48
- Ball speed loss on 'good' swings
Common causes
- Distance from the ball drifting
- Posture standing up through impact
- Swing arc bottom moving (see Low Point)
How to improve it
- Foot spray or impact tape EVERY practice block — data without strike is half the story
- Slow swings to 70% until the strike centers
- Fix setup distance and posture before swing thoughts
