In plain English

Smash factor = ball speed ÷ club speed. It measures how much of your swing's speed actually reaches the ball. Higher = purer strike.

Going deeper

Every club has a ceiling (driver ~1.50, 7-iron ~1.38, wedges lower BY DESIGN — loft trades speed for spin). Chase your club's ceiling, not the driver number, and read smash WITH strike location.

The advanced view

Smash below ceiling has exactly three causes: off-center strike (gear effect steals speed), excess spin loft (glancing blow), or gear mismatch. Diagnose in that order — strike explains most amateur smash loss.

Why it matters for scoring

It converts directly to distance: +0.05 smash at 90mph club speed ≈ 4.5mph ball speed ≈ ~9 yards, free.

How it shows up in your ball flight

Low smash shows as shots that fly short of their speed — often with extra curve from the off-center hit that caused it.

How it shows up in launch monitor data

Smash Factor per shot; ShotIQ flags Strike Quality when your average sits materially below your club's ceiling.

Typical values: driver ~1.44–1.50, 7i ~1.33–1.38, SW ~1.0–1.1.

Symptoms

Common causes

How to improve it

  1. Strike-location feedback (spray/tape) before anything else
  2. Compression work to shrink spin loft
  3. Only then consider a fitting
Common misconception. "Wedges have bad smash — I'm mishitting them." A 58° wedge at 1.05 is PERFECT: loft is supposed to trade speed for spin. Compare each club against its own ceiling.
