In plain English

The ball mostly goes where the face points at the moment of contact — about 75–85% of the start direction comes from the face, not the swing.

Going deeper

If your ball starts off-line, that's a face problem. If it starts on-line and curves away, that's a face-TO-PATH problem. Separating those two is how you stop fixing the wrong thing.

The advanced view

Face control is a timing budget: the face rotates through impact in fractions of a degree per millisecond, so delivery variability in face angle dwarfs path variability for most amateurs. That's why dispersion training is face training.

Why it matters for scoring

Start line is scoring: a perfect curve that starts 10° off-line is still a lost ball.

How it shows up in your ball flight

Open face at impact starts the ball toward your fade side; closed starts it toward your draw side — regardless of your swing's shape.

How it shows up in launch monitor data

Face Angle in degrees (+ = open/right for a right-hander). Watch its SPREAD across a session, not just the average — a ±4° face is a two-way miss even when the mean is 0°.

Typical values: within ±2° of the start line you intend.

Symptoms

Common causes

How to improve it

  1. Slow-motion swings holding the face square past impact
  2. Start-line gates 3 feet ahead of the ball
  3. Match grip strength to how much you naturally rotate the face
Common misconception. "The ball goes where I swing." The old ball-flight model had it backwards — the FACE dominates the start, the path curves it.
