Wrist Conditions
Flexion, extension, and why the face is set long before impact.
In plain English
Your lead wrist can be bowed (flexed), flat, or cupped (extended). A cupped lead wrist at the top usually means an open face; bowed means closed. The wrists 'pre-set' the face early.
Going deeper
Face problems at impact are often top-of-swing problems: arrive at the top cupped and you must rotate hard on the way down to square it — a timing tax you pay under pressure.
The advanced view
Wrist conditions interact with grip: a strong grip + flat wrist delivers square; a weak grip needs some cup to feel square at the top. Change one without auditing the other and the face moves in ways your path never explains.
Why it matters for scoring
It's the earliest controllable cause of face angle — fix it here and impact needs no rescue.
How it shows up in your ball flight
Cupped-wrist patterns leak toward your fade side and lose compression; bowed patterns smother toward your draw side when overdone.
How it shows up in launch monitor data
No monitor measures wrists directly — but a face-to-path bias that survives grip and release work points here. The Swing Analyzer can often SEE it at the top of your backswing.
Typical values: lead wrist near flat at the top for neutral grips.
Symptoms
- Face never feels square without manipulation
- Slice returns whenever you speed up
- Video shows the clubface pointing skyward at the top
Common causes
- Grip rolled open in the takeaway
- 'Reaching' at the top
- Copying a bowed-wrist look without the matching grip
How to improve it
- Check the lead-wrist at the top on video: aim for flat-ish, matched to your grip
- Rehearse motorcycle-throttle feel (slight bow) in slow motion if you cup
- Change wrist feel OR grip — never both at once
