In plain English

How your hands hold the club decides where the face points at impact. A 'strong' grip (hands rotated toward your trail side) tends to close the face; a 'weak' grip opens it.

Going deeper

Grip sets your natural face delivery. If your face-to-path number is chronically open or closed, the grip is the first place to look — it changes the face without changing your swing.

The advanced view

Grip strength biases the face at impact through forearm rotation demand: a weak grip requires active release to square the face under time pressure (~0.3s downswing), which is why weak grips leak open under speed. Match grip strength to your release pattern, not to a textbook.

Why it matters for scoring

The face controls ~75–85% of where the ball starts. Your hands control the face. No swing change sticks while the grip fights it.

How it shows up in your ball flight

A grip that leaves the face open to the path curves the ball toward your fade side; one that closes it curves toward your draw side.

How it shows up in launch monitor data

Shows up in Face Angle and Face-to-Path. A persistent face-to-path bias (e.g. +4° open on most swings) with a normal path usually traces to grip or release, not the swing's shape.

Typical values: face within ±2° of the path for most amateurs.

Symptoms

Common causes

How to improve it

  1. Check the knuckle count at address (2–3 visible on the lead hand is neutral)
  2. Hold the club in the fingers, pressure ~4/10
  3. Change grip in small steps — it feels wrong for ~2 weeks, which is normal
Common misconception. "A stronger grip means gripping harder." Strength is hand ROTATION, not pressure — squeezing harder actually slows the release.
