Release
How the face squares through impact — timing, not flipping.
In plain English
Through impact the club naturally rotates as your forearms and body turn. 'Release' is letting that rotation square the face at the right moment — hold it off and the face stays open; flip early and it snaps shut.
Going deeper
Your release pattern must MATCH your grip: strong grips need less hand rotation (body-led release), weak grips need more. Mismatches show up as a face-to-path number that fights you.
The advanced view
Elite release is mostly rotation-driven: the body keeps turning so the hands don't have to time a flip. A 'late but fast' hand release under pressure is the classic two-way-miss generator — the fix is usually MORE body rotation, not better hand timing.
Why it matters for scoring
It's the delivery mechanism for every face number in your data.
How it shows up in your ball flight
Held-off release: fades, blocks, shots leaking to your fade side. Early/flippy: hooks, added loft, height with no distance.
How it shows up in launch monitor data
Face-to-Path direction plus its spread. A tight path with a scattered face = release timing; both scattered = sequencing further back.
Typical values: face spread under ±3° across a session.
Symptoms
- Blocks and hooks from the same swing
- Face feels 'flippy' at speed
- Big miss appears under pressure
Common causes
- Grip/release mismatch
- Body rotation stalling (hands take over)
- Trying to steer the ball at the target
How to improve it
- Let the toe pass the heel just after impact — passive, not forced
- Keep the chest turning to the finish so the hands stay quiet
- Slow-motion 9-to-3 swings watching the face rotate
