Ball Position
Moves your low point, your launch, and your start line — without one swing change.
In plain English
Where the ball sits in your stance decides whether you catch it on the way down (irons) or the way up (driver). Forward = higher launch and later strike; back = lower flight and earlier strike.
Going deeper
Ball position is a low-point tool: irons want the ball slightly ahead of center so the club bottoms out AFTER it; driver wants it at the lead heel so the club is ascending.
The advanced view
Each half-ball of position shifts attack angle roughly a degree and rotates the path direction you present at impact (further back = more in-to-out delivered). Fat/thin patterns and unexplained push/draws are often position drift, not technique.
Why it matters for scoring
It silently controls attack angle, strike quality and start line — three of the biggest numbers in your data.
How it shows up in your ball flight
Too far back: low flight, pushes, fat contact. Too far forward: thin strikes, pulls, ballooning drivers.
How it shows up in launch monitor data
Shows in Attack Angle (down too much / up too little), Low Point, and paired carry inconsistency (fat = short, thin = flat).
Typical values: irons −2° to −5° down, driver 0° to +5° up.
Symptoms
- Fat AND thin misses in the same session
- Driver spinning high, irons launching low
- Push-draws from nowhere
Common causes
- No fixed reference at address
- Stance width changing shot to shot
- Copying driver position for irons
How to improve it
- Build positions off the LEAD heel: driver at the heel, wedges center, irons in between
- Use two alignment sticks in a T to audit weekly
- Film face-on — your feel is usually 2 inches off
