Attack Angle
Hitting down or up — and why driver and irons want OPPOSITE answers.
In plain English
Attack angle is whether the clubhead is travelling down or up at impact. Irons are struck slightly DOWN (ball first, then turf). Driver is struck UP off the tee for max distance.
Going deeper
Down too much with driver adds loft-killing spin and costs serious carry. Up with an iron means you've bottomed out early — thin and fat strikes both live there.
The advanced view
Attack angle shifts your delivered path (down = path presents more out; up = more in) and sets spin loft with dynamic loft. Optimizing driver from −3° to +3° at the same speed is often worth 15–25 yards of carry — free distance.
Why it matters for scoring
It's the biggest distance lever in your data that doesn't require swinging faster.
How it shows up in your ball flight
Driver down-strikes: low launch, high spin, ballooning flight. Iron up-strikes: thin contact, no compression, floaty distance-less shots.
How it shows up in launch monitor data
Attack Angle in degrees (+ = up). ShotIQ flags a driver launch fault when your average is negative, and an iron scoop fault when it's positive.
Typical values: irons −2° to −5°; driver 0° to +5°.
Symptoms
- Driver carries shorter than swing speed suggests
- Sky marks on the driver crown
- Iron shots with no divot or divots behind the ball
Common causes
- Ball position (too far back = down, too forward with irons = up)
- Spine tilt missing at driver address
- Trying to 'lift' the ball with irons
How to improve it
- Driver: tee high, ball at lead heel, spine tilted slightly away from target
- Irons: weight favoring the lead side, hands ahead, strike ball THEN turf
- Never mix the two feels — they are opposite jobs
