Swing Plane
The tilted circle your club travels around your body.
In plain English
Imagine the club swinging around you on a tilted hula-hoop. Stay close to that hoop and the club returns to the ball travelling toward the target; leave it and you have to make corrections mid-swing.
Going deeper
Plane errors don't matter by themselves — they matter because of what they force at impact: a too-steep downswing plane usually arrives out-to-in with a dug low point; too flat tends to arrive in-to-out with the club exiting left low.
The advanced view
Think in deliveries, not positions: shaft pitch in transition sets your available path window at impact. Steep shaft → path must exit left (out-to-in) or the hosel leads; flat shaft → path exits right. Fix the transition pitch and the impact path follows.
Why it matters for scoring
Plane is upstream of path. Chronic path numbers rarely change until the delivery plane that creates them does.
How it shows up in your ball flight
Steep: pulls, slices, big divots, high spin. Flat: pushes, hooks, thin strikes, blocks under pressure.
How it shows up in launch monitor data
You can't measure plane directly on most launch monitors, but its fingerprints are Club Path direction plus Attack Angle severity moving TOGETHER (steep = out-to-in AND down; flat = in-to-out AND shallow).
Typical values: path within ±3° of neutral.
Symptoms
- Divots deep or nonexistent
- Ball flight changes when you swing harder
- One good shot per three
Common causes
- Takeaway rolling inside or lifting outside
- Transition starting with the shoulders (steepens) or the hands throwing out
- Posture standing up through the ball
How to improve it
- Rehearse slow-motion transitions feeling the trail elbow drop in front of your hip
- Use the headcover-outside-the-ball gate
- Match the fix to your data — steep and flat need OPPOSITE feels
