Dynamic Loft & Spin Loft
The loft you actually DELIVER — not the number stamped on the club.
In plain English
Your 7-iron says 30°, but the loft the ball actually sees depends on your hands and shaft at impact. Hands ahead = less loft (stronger, lower, further). Flipping = more loft (weak, high, short).
Going deeper
Dynamic loft minus attack angle = spin loft, the gap that creates spin and 'compression'. Big spin loft = high spin, less speed transfer; small = penetrating flight and better smash.
The advanced view
Spin loft is the master dial: it trades speed for spin. Reducing iron spin loft ~4° (shaft lean without adding down-strike) typically buys a club of distance AND a stronger flight; with driver, low spin loft plus upward attack is the modern distance recipe.
Why it matters for scoring
Two swings at identical speed can be a club apart in distance purely on delivered loft.
How it shows up in your ball flight
Too much dynamic loft: high, spinny, short 'floaters'. Too little: low bullets that don't hold greens.
How it shows up in launch monitor data
Dynamic Loft when your device records it; otherwise its shadow is launch angle + spin rate together (high launch AND high spin for the club = added loft at impact).
Typical values: 7-iron spin ~6,500–7,500 rpm at mid speeds.
Symptoms
- Iron distances one club short of your speed
- Ball climbing and stalling
- Wedges spinning but irons ballooning
Common causes
- Wrists flipping before impact
- Ball too far forward
- Weight back at the strike
- Grip too weak forcing a late scoop
How to improve it
- Feel the shaft leaning toward the target at iron impact
- Punch-shot ladders: low, medium, full — learn the loft dial
- Check launch+spin per club against your speed with the coach
