In plain English

'Compression' is clean, ball-first contact with the face delivering less loft — the strike that feels like nothing and flies forever. It comes from where the club bottoms out, not from swinging harder.

Going deeper

Compressed iron impact = hands slightly ahead, weight on the lead side, ball-then-turf. The data signature is high smash for the club, medium launch, and spin that matches — not exceeds — your speed.

The advanced view

Impact is the only moment the ball cares about: ~0.5ms of contact defined by face, path, attack, dynamic loft and strike point. Everything else in the swing exists only to deliver those five numbers — train impact backwards from the data.

Why it matters for scoring

It's the feeling every golfer chases and the exact thing your launch monitor was built to measure.

How it shows up in your ball flight

Compressed: penetrating start, stable flight, full carry. Uncompressed: high-launch/high-spin floaters or thin bullets.

How it shows up in launch monitor data

Smash factor near the club's ceiling, spin in range for the club, launch matching loft. ShotIQ's Compression flag fires when attack angle goes positive with irons.

Typical values: 7-iron ~1.33–1.38 well struck.

Symptoms

Common causes

How to improve it

  1. Strike ball THEN turf — divot starts at the line
  2. Feel hands ahead of the clubhead at iron impact
  3. Punch shots: half swing, full compression, then scale up
Common misconception. "Compression means swinging harder." It's a STRIKE quality, not a speed. A 70mph swing can compress a 9-iron perfectly.
